We’ve all done it. We’ve all made a big blunder in our leadership. Heck, the book Contagious Leadership is a collection of the lessons I learned in years of learning to lead the hard way. The trick is not to avoid ever making a mistake, but to jump right in and fix it, learn from it, and move forward.
Think about it this way, as my friend and comedian Darren Lacroix is fond of saying. “Have you ever fallen on your face?” Mind you after he says that he literally falls on his face on the stage, like doing a forward Nestea plunge! And once he’s been down for moments that make the audience just a bit uncomfortable, he then asks: “Have you ever stayed down too long?” Have you? However, here’s the key learning lesson: once you’ve fallen down or fallen on your face, do you ever realize that at least you’ve fallen forward and still, even in the error, made some progress?
